Combining the Artist and the Healer:
Art is healing to both the creator and the viewer. Catherine is also a talented energy healer and combines her love of the creative process and her love of serving others through energy healing. “For me the best way to be all that I am is to do both together to serve in the world.!”
Testimonial:
I feel a deep kinship with my Kimono (Robe of Peace #9). I believe this stems from the fact that Catherine Foster, the artist, kept in touch with me throughout the creative process by means of her pictures and videos. She responded with great enthusiasm to my request to add American Sign Language which I use to communicate due to my congenital deafness. To this end, she created several beautiful carvings of the finger spelling for the word PEACE and cleverly incorporated them into the Robe. These carvings now show that Deaf people too have the same desire for peace as hearing people who are represented on the Robe by means of a variety of alphabets and ideograms, as well as the Blind represented in Braille. The carvings blend so effectively that it is hard to take one’s eyes off the work. Simply said, the Robe is so beautiful that the colors, design, and Foster’s creativity have me spellbound. Ms. Foster is an artist to be recognized locally, nationally, and internationally.

Peace Prevails Project and “Gloria” The Peace Maiden-A Peacemaker for the Earth.
“I know that within my heart and soul peace prevails and is spoken in many languages”. –Catherine Foster
Living life in the present in a state of peace is my personal challenge especially while creating my artwork. In preparation for my Peace Prevails Show, I was looking for a mannequin to use to create a Peace Warrior.
Peace Prevails and the creation of Gloria
Originally I had planned on creating a Peace Warrior. This changed when I was gifted by Cindy and Don Hoskins, who own Earthenworks galleries in WA. When they heard I was looking for a mannequin to use as a base, they gave me “Gloria” a forgotten 70ish form boxed in the corner of their basement. Instead of the Peace Warrior she became the “Peace Maiden”. What a joy it was to tune into what “Gloria” wanted to wear. Her clothes are woven embossed metals with words of peace from around the world. Sometimes she spook to me in dreams and I would wake up going “ Oh she wants mesh metal stockings!!! “ OK, or “ opps the skirt is not short enough” and “I want an underskirt:!
We took Gloria out of the large box and put her together in the entry hall. There she was nude, wearing a wild looking 70ish wig and long eye lashes. For a long time she did not talk to me and stood by the window at the front door. Every time someone came in the door they would gasp as this nude being greeted them, including me even though I knew she was there.
Then one day she started to talk to me in my mind and dreams. Gloria said she wanted to be painted gold. We took her outside and sprayed her with several coats of gold paint. I had a lot of help creating Gloria. At the time there were 3 art interns working in the studio fulfilling their required hours to graduate at NW College of Art . This is Jessica Lambert who was a big help to me on the Peace Prevails Project.
This old video created in the process of starting the peace prevails project tells about the creation of gloria and how she talked to me. See it here!
Peace Prevails Through Artwork by Catherine Foster
“Gloria” went through many changes as I listened to her in my dreams, from shortening her skirt, giving her a purse to put quotes of peace from family, friends and famous quotes, to redoing her helmet, giving her mesh stockings and more. The helmet I purchased was way too big for Gloria, so I ended up creating a new hat for her with wings and symbols of peace. Originally I planned on her holding a crystal world globe in her hands, but it was too heavy. Now she has a lightweight metal globe in its place. She wanted shin guards on her legs that have the world words of peace and symbols of peace. Her metal mesh stocking where a challenge. I went through many band aides putting those on her legs and also weaving the copper. Her eyes were painted about 4 times as I tried to get them just perfect. One of my friends said she saw the world in Gloria’s eyes.
Gloria’s part in the Peace Prevails Project was huge. I even had help creating a recording of voices in other languages of peace that was motion activated at the show, but there were so many people that the sound was not heard.
What does Peace Prevails mean?
My dear Friend Sheryl Allen wrote about “Gloria” when I first mentioned wanting to create a Peace Warrior.
The Peacemaker By Sheryl Allen
For thousands of years the masculine warrior energy of force and strength dominated Earth. The feminine qualities of unity and love were thought to be a weakness to be conquered and controlled. Now, this feminine essence is a sleeping giantess awakening in men and women, urging us toward global peace and community leaving war and separation behind.
Weapons of war are forged from metal. To transmute this energy, the Peacemaker wears an iridescent robe of yielding, woven metal embossed with words of peace from languages around the world. The radiant robe symbolizes the light within each of us. It’s tempered yielding strength reminds us to allow love to prevail. Each of the separate pieces is woven together creating one garment of wholeness.
Peace is not just the absence of conflict. True peace is the result of a desire for unity. Peace comes from within and if we are to bring peace to our planet, it begins inside each of us individually. Our true divine nature is peace, love and joy. When we acknowledge and accept all aspects of ourselves and others with love and understanding…peace prevails.
The Peacemaker is symbolic of the possibility of peace within each of our hearts. Cloaked in a robe symbolizing the power of peace, this feminine essence of unity, harmony and love is a reminder of each individual’s power to create peace within themselves…allowing peace on earth to prevail.
PS from Sheryl- I like the term ‘maker’ as it refers to the divine creator to me।

What are Peace Wheels?
Peace Prevails Prayer Wheels by Catherine Foster
“In my heart and soul I know that peace prevails and is spoken in many languages”-Catherine Foster
The Peace Prayer Wheels, based on the Tibetan Prayer Wheels, are part of the Peace Prevails Project providing artwork with the focus on peace. These artworks are interactive with people as one turns the wheel clockwise sending their prayers out to the world.
The copper metal is embossed with world words of “Peace and Peace Prevails”. Considered “green” artwork, they are made in part from recycled materials. “I love searching for unusual treasure to create unique and special artworks”. Each comes with peace quotes in addition to blank cards for the owners to write their own prayers on.
How the Peace Prevails Prayer Wheels Work!
In the video above is Kayla Rabe, one of the interns who helps me with my artwork
“It is my intent to create artwork that can be functional and interactive with other people.” -Catherine Foster These Peace Prayer Wheels offer a visual and tactile meditation. With your written prayers, hopes and dreams inside it offers a way of cultivating mindfulness.
I use the words “Peace Prevails” instead of the words “May Peace Prevail” to put the intent that Peace will be achieved in the present time.

The Peace Prevails Project by Catherine Foster coming to Full Moon Gallery Gig Harbor
Peace Prevails Project Coming to Full Moon Gallery in Gig Harbor June 1st.,2013!
“In my heart and soul I know that Peace Prevails and is spoken in many languages”-Catherine Foster
My Peace Prevails Project has been an ongoing project for over 12 years now. Started with a meditation and dream. The intent to bring artwork into homes, businesses, corporations and medical buildings to bring the awareness to be the peace you desire in the world.
Peace Prevails Project by Catherine Foster is an ongoing event!
My heart and soul is fully into my peace project. It may not be much, but if my artwork can help people to remember to be the peace they desire to experience in the world, then I have helped to change the world to be a better place.
I have carved wood plates with over 300 world languages saying “Peace and Peace Prevails”. The plates are taken and copper laid over them and embossed with the use of my etching press. Then I cut the metal up and weave it into 3D artworks. You can see some of these pieces here.
The Peace Prevails Project will be showing at: Full Moon Gallery, Gig Harbor, June 1st, 2013 for the month. I will be there on June 1st. creating small works of Peace art. Come say hello!

How I created “Autumn Circles” by Catherine Foster
Autumn Circles a Piece of Art by Catherine Foster
I loved working on this piece. It is embossed metal with images of ferns. It is always my intent to experiment with new mediums. One sunny day in the Northwest, I decided to take advantage of the warm weather and paint outside on the side of the house.
Being an artist and creating art is a huge part of my every day. I can not imagine not ever being an artist or creating art. It is ingrained in who I am. Being creative is inherent in everyone. Art is just what I choose to come through me.
So Autumn Circles, how did I create this piece of art?
Below my art studio, I have several tables that are always ready to receive my intuitive impulses. It was actually a very hot day, but since I wanted to take advantage of the sun, I worked feverishly under the sun on this piece of art.
First I began with layering colors on the surface of the embossed metal. Each layer needs to cure and dry before another layer can be painted on the art piece. So that means that I went inside to cool off and come back to paint again.
Since I love to experiment, I decided to use resin on the art. My intent has been to create artwork that would be large, but weigh less than a large blown glass piece the same size. Do you also love the look of glass and how one can see many layers of colors one below the other? So I started to layer resin over the colors, let it dry on the art, then paint another layer of colors. Going back and forth over and over. Trouble is that the resin needed to cure before I could paint another layer. This piece actually took many months to create. It was not done in one day in the sun. If you live in the Northwest, you know how fast our weather can change from sunshine to rain right? But when I started this art piece, Autumn Circles, it was on a wonderful sunny day.
What do artists feel when they are creating a piece of art?
I remember getting lost in the moment in complete joy while painting Autumn Circles. Part of doing the artwork for me is being in that special time of no time. “There is a special time between the spark of inspiration and the completed piece that marks both reality and total immersion. The end product becomes a physical manifestation of this creative process that has the ability to stir something deep within us with its mysterious beauty. I am absorbed and fascinated with how our lives, the earth, history, relationships are woven together creating a collective fabric of life”-Catherine Foster
As I continued to work on Autumn Circles over the next few months, I stopped at about the 100th layer of paint and resin. It is sometimes difficult for artists to know when to stop working on piece of art but at some point we need to say, it is finished! This is currently being shown at Dragon Fire Studio Gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon. This weekend, May 3rd, 2013 is the annual Spring Unveiling in Cannon Beach. I invite you to come visit the artists that are being featured this year and also come see Autumn Circles and other artwork by me, Catherine Foster.

There is Perfection in Imperfection!
by Catherine Foster
Have you ever heard the expression, ” Hit by a Mack truck?”. Well it happened. There came a day, an interesting day, when I jumped off a sailboat to help tie it up and landed flat on my face on a cold wet wood planked dock. With the movement of the boat going up and down, I was having trouble seeing where to jump and hesitated too long. The boat was nearing the dock and I had to jump before we crashed the sailboat. Everyone was yelling, “Jump, Jump off! Now!” In a split moment I built up my courage to jump. Flying in the air, time seemed to go on forever. Boom …I landed flat on my face. My glasses went flying. My head jerked back as it hit the wood curb on the dock and I was knocked out. I lay motionless. My sister thought I was dead. My nose broken and the flesh hanging down from the tip of my nose…. blood was everywhere, and I was in shock. I was rushed to the emergency room in the nearby town.
After that, an adventure of a new way of being in the world came together in my life.
Nothing ever happens to us that good does not come from it. Often it is just about turning around and seeing the blessings in our story……………..
