Weaving Series by Catherine Foster

Throughout my whole career the theme of weaving has intertwined with my  paintings, sculpture and beliefs driving my creative process.

Even though I have explored many modalities of expressing myself throughout my career, weaving has been a common thread in nearly every piece of art I have created. Why has it had so much meaning to me?

Peace Weaving

Our lives are a golden woven tapestry. Each person's experience here on earth is a variety of threads of feelings, experiences, and emotions. We are all connected in this tapestry along threads of these varied qualities. Sometimes there ar vibrant colors that relate to what has happened our life experiences. Sometimes there are holes and loose threads and knots tha thave caused stress into the tapestry. But still we are connected in the golden fabric of life along with every plant,, rock, piece of sand, animal, insect etc. Included in this fabric are threads of various religions, politics and a variety of beliefs. It represents the ever evolving weaving in this golden blanke we call life on earth.

Each of us has our own separate tapestry that is connected to the larger fabric of life. What happens for one of us is also  connected to the whole.  The threads are interlaced with an event, person and each associated with an emotion. It is these emotions that connect us together in body, mind and soul. We can travel on these threads to connect with everyone and everything for we are all one.

My friend Anne Sano Keller expresses it very well in her book: " More than a And Whisper- One Woman's Journey Through Pain To Grace".  When I read her words I felt as though she had been reading my mind. Thank you Anne for expessing what is also in my heart.  I could not have expressed it better.

The Flute Player

"Weaving  tapestry with threads of varied colors and textures creates a beautiful picture that tells an interesting story. Some of the threads are dark and rough, perhaps frightening, and often sad. They bring depth to my life's story. Others are light and silken, brilliantly colored, bringing, joy, love and light to the image. Some threads are short and only briefly used and some are lengthy, meandering throughout the whole picture, from one end to the other. Without each and every thread, the tapestry would be incompete."

LISTENING by Catherine Foster

How do you listen to your heart to hear what

wants to be created?

What wants to come forth to express your unique self?

This is the second piece in the series "As Time Moves". I call it "Listening".  To understand better,  Click Here  to read how this series of silk fusion/mixed media pieces started.

After creating "Born Once Again", I started creating 3 more pieces. I have to work on more than one at a time due to the fact that it takes days to dry each layer of the silk. Yes, even in this hot weather in Rio Vista, CA, these pieces dry slowly.

Originally, I thought this was going to be a piece called "Blooming", but it did not happen! YIKES!  Often a piece is put aside in the studio. I pull it out and keep an ongoing dialog with the artwork.  It just did not want to be what I thought it was going to be.  I stopped fighting with the painting and left it over on the side hidden behind other paintings for a few weeks.  Then out of the blue, it started to talk again.  As I listened, the piece said it was through, finished! Shocked!  It did not want to be what "I" wanted it to be. After all I am the creator of this art piece right?  NOT!!!

The artwork has a mind of its own. We may have the inspiration to create a piece a certain way, but if we really listen to what wants to be expressed, it often becomes something different.  The artwork will become what it truly needs to be.

I love when that happens! When I truly give in and listen from my heart, my true self is expressed.  What is current in my life is expressed through my artwork.  You might ask, "What was my state of being when I created this piece?"

As explained in  "Born Once Again"  , there have been major changes in my life and my husbands. I do not regret the move, other than missing the big beautiful art studio I had in Poulsbo, WA. It is just different.  "Listening" is an expression of wiping the mind, soul and thoughts clean in order to start again. Sometimes, things have to fall apart before they can begin to  grow again.

I love the weaving of the energy of life in all the work I do. The tree is a symbol of possible growth and is in a state of being bare.  My face is in a meditative state as I listen to what is my next step in my career. As an artist, healer, coach etc. I do not give up. There is an inner drive within my heart to go deep and express my feelings. It is who I am and to deny my true self, is to deny the connection with the universe.  In the creation and the sharing of the creation, our gifts to share in the world can be expressed.

As with "Born Once Again"  this piece has an organic feel about it. It feels unfinished because the Fabric of life is never finished.  We are a collective consciousness that is continually being created because God is always in the process of creation.

Nothing ever stays the same in this process. "Everything is in Divine Order"! We just need to trust this. My hope is that maybe my message can help someone else to freely express their talents in a loving and harmonious way too.

In deep appreciation of you in my life experience,
